If your early childhood experiences have produced a positive attitude, you are indeed fortunate and have a head start over others. But, if you have acquired a negative attitude, whether by design or by default – are you stuck with it? Of course not. Can you change your attitude? Yes. Is it easy? Absolutely not! Is it worth it? As you grow up, you form a mental image of who you are, based on personal and cultural conditioning. We may call this phantom self the ego. It consists of mind activity and can only be kept going through constant thinking. The term ego means different things to different people, but when I use it here it means a false self, created by unconscious identification with the mind. Be aware of the principles that build a positive attitude, have a desire to be positive, cultivate the discipline and dedication to practice those principles. You hear many self-made success stories, but have you ever heard a self-made failure story? Probably not. Failures with negative attitudes blame the whole world for their failures – their parents, teachers, spouse, bosses, the stars, fate, luck, the economy and the government. They will never accept responsibility.
Most of us are unable to see the truth of who we could be. If it’s hard to imagine the potential in yourself, then you might want to begin by expressing it as a fantasy, as did the children who wrote the poems. Think up some stories about who you would like to be. Soon you will begin to create the necessary blueprint for stretching your accomplishments. Looking for the positive does not necessarily mean overlooking faults. Being a positive thinker does not mean one has to agree or accept everything.
